Services

Ignite Literacy Services provides professional development to schools in Middle Tennessee. All sessions are delivered by Merideth Myers, Ed.S.

For ELA teachers in grades 3-10:
This two-day professional development series is designed to empower teachers with the tools and strategies needed to prepare students for the TCAP Writing Task. This training focuses on Tennessee ELA Writing Standards 1-3, emphasizing opinion/argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing. Through interactive sessions, participants will unpack the standards, analyze high-quality writing exemplars, engage in writing teacher models, and explore best practices for fostering student success. By the end of the sessions, teachers will feel confident in guiding students to write with purpose, clarity, and depth.

Key Takeaways for Teachers:

  1. Deep Understanding of Standards: Gain insight into TN ELA Writing Standards 1-3 and their expectations for student performance.
  2. Strategies for Writing Instruction: Learn effective methods for teaching opinion/argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing.
  3. Assessment Literacy: Develop the ability to evaluate writing tasks using rubrics aligned with TCAP scoring guidelines.
  4. Exemplar Analysis: Explore examples of student writing to identify characteristics of strong responses.
  5. Practical Resources: Receive exemplars, prompts, graphic organizers, a timing protocol, and instructional strategies to implement immediately in your classroom.
  6. Curriculum Integration: Learn how to connect and supplement your existing reading curriculum with writing tasks that align with the TCAP writing expectations, creating a cohesive approach to literacy instruction.

Suggested delivery:

  • Summer/Fall session: how to teach process writing.
  • Winter/Spring session: how to prepare for the on-demand writing task.

For all ELA teachers:
In 2023 all public schools were required to adopt an approved HQIM. After several years of implementing with fidelity, many schools are no longer seeing growth of their average and high students.

This professional development is designed for educators who want to challenge their highest-performing students. Participants will analyze data trends to uncover gaps between curriculum materials and the skills students need to excel. The session provides practical strategies that can maintain high expectations and help top students reach their full potential.

This session will be tailored to fit within the curricula your teachers are already using, ensuring immediate and meaningful application.
